Post by kosejentan »

Hi!

I'm new in the game and are getting a baby INR in a month. I'm used to handle birds but do not know a lot of IRN. So I have a lot of questions and hope tp get some answeres here.

Type of cage?
What kind of food?
What type of toys do your birds like?
Flightsuits other alternatives?
Poisoning food or plants?
What other thing should I think of?
Do IRN get along with budgies and cockatiels?
Treats?

Please write all you kan answere. I'm greatful for everything! :D

Hello again, im no expert as i,ve only had marley for 5 months but ihave learnt quite alot in s short space of time. And most of it from this site, Its easier to say wot u shouldnt feed ur baby Avacado, onion, citrus pips, including apple. chocolate, caffiene. There are a few more, if u have a read of previous forums there are losts of posts about wot not to feed IRN's.
Marley loves to play with the little balls with bells in that u would buy for ur cat. Make sure its one of the stronger makes, marley can destroy one within minutes. I also have a selection of babys ratles and small building blocks, some of which have little mirrors on them, he loves them . Im constantly searchin for new toys, but u can use lots of things that u have lying around the house, plastic clothes pegs, not the ones that have metal springs, the ones that are in one peice. Also tea spoons is another favourite.Anything that isnt easily chewd into small bits or not goin to get the beak trap. Had a friend who's african grey got his beak stuck on a bell, we got it off but it caused a lot of stress for everyone. U av to regulary check the condition of the toys for wear and tear. I also swap the toys about so he doest get bored of the same ones. Im going on a bit now buts thats all the advice i can give as im not as expert as some of the wonderful peeps on this site. Oh except marley hates my budgie, reggie, reggie likes him though   they are in different rooms, and i never let them out together, poor little reggie wouldnt stand a chance against the mighty marley, haha. natalie xx

Thank you Natalie!!! It's so good that my experience with birds kan hold up with the new incoming baby. Then I know I'm on the right track. :D But I didn't know that birds shouldn't eat apple!!! My birds aren't that happy about fruits at all. I've tried but the just won't eat it. They look at me as if I'm crazy or something! But they love the seeds and corn and beans that I put in water for about 12 hours and rinse thorough before I serve them (don't know if you have a word for this in english). They also eat pellets and sallad and urbs like basilika! Dried pieces of carrots are a big tread for them too. And seeds as they are of course :D

It's so sad that I didn't know about this site earlier because I'm leaving tonight (it's only 3.45 p.m. here) for the hosptal and I don't actually know when I'm gona be back. Hopefully they will have access to the net from the hospital but I don't know that for sure. But when I get back I'll read and enjoy during my recoverytime. :D :D :D

Bye for now!

Natalie...even if you've owned these birds for years you can still learn. No one is turly an expert

As for your questions I'll try my best to answer

Cage type- As large as you can find with 5/8 or less of bar spacing. I suppose you could go a tad bigger but small is better. Don't want your bird getting it's head stuck in the bars...not a good idea Also, try for a cage with more horizontal bars, they love to climb and vertical bars are harder to keep a grip on.

Food- good tip is if you wont eat it dont feed it to your bird. Find a good pellet mix (Harrison's is probably the best I've found) and give that as the daily food but also mix in about 2 or 3 tablespoons of a decent seed mixture. They have an inate need to crack seeds so please provide thise for them. Try not to give sunflower seeds or safflower (those tiny white seeds in most mixtures) as these are like giving your bird a choice of eating fruits to a snickers bar. Fresh fruits and veggies are a MUST but as Natalie pointed out NO avacado, caffine, chocolate, onion, citrus pips, no apple seeds but the flesh is fine.

Toys- this is what the birds likes. Prinny adores anything with bells that she can just beat the daylights out of. Anything with beads she also loves to play with. She really isn't much of a wood chewer but some are. Buy a varity of toys and change them out every week so your bird doesn't get bored.

Flightsuits- Prinny HATES a flightsuit but I have heard of birds taking to them just fine. Best idea is to start early and be firm but gentle when trying to get your bird used to them. When I take Prinny out and about she is usually inside my overshirt or in her carrier since she will not take to a flight suit.

Poisions- look this up on websites...you will find complete lists everywhere...too many to count!

Keep asking as many questions as you can think of...one of us will have the answer.

Other birds- Please be warned these birds have different personalities and be very VERy careful when introducing to others. Good rule of thumb is never leave them alone by themselves. I have heard of most tolerating other birds but Prinny has never really been around other birds Ask Mazziemom or Neo for these particular answers.

Treats- anything you want to call a treat. Prinny loves spray millet so that's a treat for her. Sometimes I'll give her a few sunflower seeds but those are a special treat. Fruits and veggies can be used for treats...find a food your bird will go crazy for and figure that makes a good treat.

Please ask away...we're just brimming with knowledge and will share willingly

No two IRNs are the same...this is the biggest most important thing you have to remember so not everything here will apply to your bird.

Thank you Dani03!!! Okey, so it was apple seeds not the flesh. I was wondering about this. About other birds in same enviroment. I have budgis and cockatiels and thatäs exactly what the baby is growing up with at the breeders place! Not in same cages of course but it's used to hear them and soon he will see them. So hopefully he will like them. I'm used to be with the birds when they are out together and I just leave them for short moments if I just have to do something very importent. For longer moments I put either the budgies or the cockatiels in their cages. Mostley the cockatiels. And Jia (I think that's gonna be the name of the new baby IRN) is getting his own cage :D

When I now leave for the hospital I'll write down all the questions a can get in my head so I can "bomb" you with all of them when I get back! :D
