we have owned our irn for about 3 weeks now think she was mistreated by 1st owner we let her out to fly but we only get her back in her cage when she wants to eat or drink and we close the door, once she is back in she goes absolutely crazy trying to get out again trying to get the door open and trying all the bars of the cage literally rattling them, does anyone have any idea why, she has always seemed to be a very frightened bird since we got her wont let us go anywhere near her

She's nervous and still not comfortable in her new surroundings. Is this a new cage? If so, she probably isn't used to it still. Do you have any items from her previous life that could make her feel more comfortable until she gets used to everything? Is her cage big enough?

Was she previously an aviary bird and now a caged bird? Or maybe she was housed in a very small cage and is now frightened of confined spaces? How big is her cage compared to where she came from?

i don,t know if she was an aviary bird we bought her from somebody who had been given her as a birthday present and didn,t want her, said she hadn,t bothered with her, she had a small cage and a twig which she had got from the garden for a perch, nothing in the bottom of the cage and no toys or anything to play with she definitely prefers being out of the cage even though we bought her a new one which is at least double the size of the old one the old one also looked like it had cigarette burns in the bottom of it

It could have just been an old second hand cage they got for her if that's all they could afford. I'm thinking she's on new surroundings overload. Try removing all toys from her cage. Wait one week, give her time to settle. Then reintroduce one at a time by hanging it on the outside for a few days first before moving it inside. If she's neve had toys before, all of the colors and objects surrounding her may be frightening her.

we havent got her any toys yet we were advised by the pet shop not to put any in just a kind of rope for her to chew on the previous owner had a cat not sure if thats the reason shes scared

Ok....what exactly is her cage size?

her cage size is approx 4 feet high 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep

It probably just as Ellie said then...she just needs time to adjust. Try keeping her in her cage for a few days to adjust to it before letting her out again. Maybe she just needs time to adjust to one thing at a time.
