Covering the cage?

I have read topics here before about whether or not to cover a irn's cage at night. I can't seem to find this topic on here so does anyone know whether it is a good or bad thing to do. I do cover mine at night and find he is most excited in a morning when I remove the cover. He is in quite a large cage, I use a doona cover for his cover. The cage is against a wall and near a corner so I drape the cover over the front and the sides only. Is his excitement one of pleased to see me or that of relief to get the cover off? He does not complain when I am putting the cover on, he just goes to his sleeping corner on the top perch. Personal experiences and facts are both much appreciated. Thanks

Hey Elaine,
I personally cover my babies at night too. I have never had any problems covering them. Don't really know what the "experts" have to say about it. It's winter here and can get to below zero at night and I feel that covering them also helps to keep them warm at night. I think you're ok covering him at night, but that's just my personal opinion. It also helps to keep them quiet during the morning hours when you're trying to sleep.

I covered Mazzie and Buddy for years, and then just stopped doing it. They didnt seem to miss it, but they never seemed to mind it either?

I covered when the cages were out in the second lounge and in my sons room 2 IRN and the tiel in my daughters room and the budgies in the laundry .. lol .. otherwise we had the house woken up way too early with calls. But now they are all in the one birdroom (after much house shifting and moving two daughters into new rooms) I don't cover them anymore and they don't miss it either.

I don't cover the cage because Prinny hates it! She wont get a good nights rest unless that cage is uncovered. Lord she sure is a brat...and so spoiled. Yep my vote is uncovered. I never covered any of my other birds because tiels have nightfrights and will thrash about in their cage...I always found that if they were uncovered they got over it better.

Hi!

I cover Nikki's cage at night. She is getting used to it, I don't think she was ever covered before.

Last night she started sqawking when I hadn't covered her at her usual time -- "Time to go to bed, Mom!" :lol:

I also have a canary whom I don't cover.

Again I believe all birds are different, some feel more secure under the covers and some dont. There is a cover over my Sun Conure cage and I dont cover my Ringecks.

My suns like jumping into my shirt, my rignecks dont.

I have always covered my birds at night (before Ringo I had peachfaces). Ringo didn't like it at first, as he likes to stay up as late as we do....but I think that he's more upset at the fact that we are putting him back in the cage. The main reason that I cover him is that it keeps him quieter in the mornings. Weekdays, Michael is up at 3am (Greenkeeper) & it keeps him settled until I get up at 6am...then on weekends he then sleeps in until we get up!! That's my personal opinion anyway.

I don´t cover Kalle or the budgies cages. Kalle gets very angry when you try to cover his cage..

When first saw Marley he was covered and had been most of the time, regardless of day or night so when he first came to us I kept him half covered,so he had somewhere to retreat to when he felt nervous , then as the weeks went on i gradually pulled the cover further and further back until one day I took it off. Marley was geting used to the noises of the house by then. I havent used a cover since, as i dont want Marley to be reminded of how he felt befor. [am i daft or wot] so no i dont use a cover anymore and he seems fine. And as for wakeing us lot in the morning, my 3 year old son usually beats Marley to it!!!! I also have a budgie and i dont cover him because he has a fit when i try. My house is pretty toastie anyway, im mid terrace with good insulation. Natalie xx.
