Why is Marley doing this, is it typical

Post by natalie »

:? Marley is coming on so well, i am so pleased he seems so much livlier and happier since he has been with us. 1 problem tho, he is making it quite clear that he only likes me. :D secretly im chuffed cos my baby is show preference to me, but what about the rest of the family. He has takern to lungeing [cant spell] at the others when they talk to him. All except Archie, the youngest, he will tollerate him. And yet Archie[2nd to me] is the nuttiest one here, he's like 'taz',hehe. So whats goin on, why this sudden hate for everyone but me. Will he get over it or have i found myself a new bodygaurd with wings. Archie and I are the ones here allday, everyone else is out. Could it be that he's just not used to them yet! So tell me are there any other rottweiler/parakeets out there????

Mazzie loves ME.

She will tolerate my husband, after we went through a lot of crud to force her to do so. She likes my oldest son, on occasion. She has attacked my youngest son over and over and over again.

Strangers can just forget it.

Datsun tolerates anyone, she has favourites, but for the most part she will go to anyone and snuggle with them. I believe that birds will always prefer one or two specific people but if you socialise them well from an early age they can be little flirts like Datsun.

On the other hand, Audi loves his Dad. I raised him and we have a strong bond but if James is around he will do anything to get to him. He will allow other people to pick him up but he will squirm and sometimes bite if he sees one of us around.

Ringo was also very nervous when we had him 5 months ago, would hide at the back of the cage when we walked past, my husband bought him for himself...ha ha ha, hates him, will step up for me accept his treats from me and the kids, will turn around and look at the wall when hubbie walks past!!!! He even stepped up onto a stranger the other night..

Michelle isnt it funny how it always works that way when there are a few of you in the family. Doesnt matter if its a bird, dog, cat or rat.
So how old is your Ringo. Marley is just over 2yrs now, so we are lucky he's taken to any of us really. He is realising that there is life beyond the bars. Good luck with Ringo , gutted for hubby, hehe. Natalie. :P

Natalie, it is funny how things work out, Ringo is approx 13 months old my husband bought him from our local pet store whwn he was 8 months old and s/he (don't know sex yet) had never been handled..i think he took a dislike to hubbie as he was the one to catch him to take him to vets when we had him clipped, we have a toy poodle which is my other baby and my hubbie bought a jack russel but he is always at my side and we have a rabbit. oh and not to forget Chico the cockatiel... The other night i had Ringo nearby, dogs at my feet clipping the rabbits nails... my daughter calls me Mrs Dolittle..I also have an 11 yr old son and 16 yr old daughter, lots of activity in the house. How are you getting on with Marley?? Cool name... I must admit giving Ringo the freedom to roam around the outside his cage was great and hubbie built a playstand which he can hop on to, he comes out Monday - Thursday from 4pm when i get home, goes to bed around 10:30 ish and on weekends out all day unless he goes in for a sleep. I do think this has made a difference to his personality and the wing clipping helped a lot aswell especially to train to step up. he is still very cautious of me, will not step up from his cage but if he flutters to the floor he will jump on my hand to go back to his cage and sometimes i get him on the play stand and move his cage out the room and spend time with him on my arm. Let me know how you get on and share your tips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#talk to the animals

Post by natalie »

Michelle i was giggling to myself reading ur post, not only because of the image i had of a lady sorrounded by all the animals , but you sound just like me except in my house they call me 'the bird lady' from mary poppins with the odd 'tupence a bag' thrown in too. Fortunatly I have a crazy sense of humour [laugh at anything] so its not too bad, besides i have names for them too, haha.Anyway all my familys pets end up by my side. Except the stick insects, although i wouldnt hurt them i just couldnt bring myself to touch. The giant african land snails dont bother me though, infact they are great. Anyway back to irn's, i agree with you, letting Marley out of the cage for some investigating is definatly helping with his tempermant. He will actualy take food from my hand outside the cage , he would only take it from the safety of his cage befor. I really want to have his wings clipped too but i dont want to inflict the trauma of it all on him. He wont let me touch him yet, thats if he ever does. I was kind of hopeing i could eventually get in to stepup then take him in a nice calm manor, but that could be a year away for all i know, we have summer to get through yet with windows and doors open etc. I know its in his interest to have it done but im scared i will undo any hard work that i have put in. So for the time being im just going to carry on and see what happems, and this summer we are all going to melt in our house    Anyway im waffleing on and ive got seeds husks to clear up , so good luck with your doolittle farm, will speak again no doubt. Natalie xx

My husband did not want to clip Ringo's wings either but when hubbie was at work and Ringo decided to have a fly around, i could not get him back to his cage.. at all...., Ringo was fine getting his wings clipped, the only trauma was catching him to take him, hubbie used a towel... Ringo was exactly the same as Marley... i still cannot touch him but once the wings were clipped i chased him onto his playstand and went in with the hand (not been bitten to date!!!) when on the playstand or on the floor he automatically lifts his foot now when he sees my hand and just hops on. Does Marley make any noises?? Ringo is very quiet but occasionally makes these whining sounds when he is playing... i still say our English IRN's are bred completely different ..

Hi Michelle, u ask if Marley makes noises! he is very vocal, but its quite sweet. Befor Marley came to me he was kept in a back room all by himself for 2yrs,but in the next room were an african grey and a blue fronted amazon, who could both talk, so im not sure if Marley is mimicing what he used to here but the noises he make always seem to make people smile, sometimes i swear he says hello, its a weird throaty noise. When he first arrived he used to make this piercing shriek that went right through you, but now its only strangers that suffer that.So yes he makes plenty of noise, from cute little chirp to full blown lung exercise!! bless  Natalie xx
