Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
Hi missk.. The update is, my IRN has gone to an aviary. Turns out he was much older than I had been told. He would've tamed, but it would have been a long and slow process. He is doing fine now and was very pleased to see some chums. I have been informed that he's playing and eating like nothing hap...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
This is going to be a long and slow process. I sneezed in the bathroom this morning and I could hear him banging into the sides of his cage. I have caught many wild animals in my time (birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals) but I got to say he has become as wary as a magpie caught in a Larsen trap...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
It looks like this irn has realised he won't be going home and seeing his friends again. He just sits and sulks and won't be consoled. He doesn't call out in the mornings anymore nor eat any treats while I'm visible. He didn't come out of his cage today but he thought about it when I hand fed the bu...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
He has hanging toys in his cage, but never showed any interest in them except for one that he uses to hide behind, which is why I enclosed the back of his cage. He's never even inspected them as far as I know. It just bugs me that I could put this poor creature through 2years (or however long it tak...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
Yes, I don't want the bird to feel uncomfortable- as in emotionally or mentally. I hate to see him living in this level of fear. I know what it's like to live in fear and it's not nice. I know he is safe and won't come to harm, but he thinks the worst. If I move too quick this bird turns to stone th...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
So, Sanjay is scared of hands but is willing to take treats from your fingers. through the bars or door? I tried a full length millet through the bars with my hand covered by my sleeve and the budgie running along it gleefully filling his boots with seed. The irn was still not impressed and my arm a...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
Thank you missk. I value your advice. I take onboard what all of you say infact. My setup consists of this.. My budgies cage is sat on a table with his playground and perches in front. My chair is against the table (I always sit here). The irn is currently in a cage 2x2x3ft. This is on the other sid...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
What I meant was, if he doesn't start to adapt to a house in a month then he may be happier with other ringnecks in an environment that he is used to. When he hears the wild jays outside (which sound much like irns) he is calling back. It's the only time I see him cheer up. Another month should be e...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
It's harder to measure the length of the tail but it's at least 6inches.. More, depending on how much is under the plumage round his bum! This bird could be a 10yr old female for all I know. It's my first irn. He was better than I was expecting the first few days, but hasn't progressed at all. I'm g...

Re: Training irns is harder than budgies!
The irn sees the budgie fly to me, eat from my hand and climb all over me. He sees no harm ever comes to him and gets treats etc. but hold the treats near the irn cage and he climbs as far from me as he can. He will eventually pickup the treats if dropped in his dish, but if I move or look at him he...

Training irns is harder than budgies!
Ok, I only had this bird for a couples of weeks now but I have come to the conclusion that this bird is stubborn as hell. He tolerates my presence but only if I don't look at him or show my hands. There is no chance of hand feeding or having him sit near me. It's good that he doesn't bite- but only ...

Re: Help Ringo won't go back in his cage!
Ah, I was told mine is 5months old so they're near enough the same age. Mine has been out the cage twice today, and went back in on his own accord both times to get to some apple I planted in his dish. I don't think he has flown before- one lap round the lounge and he was puffing like a pilchard. He...

Re: Help Ringo won't go back in his cage!
I'm curious Hayley, how long have you had this bird and how old is he?
I ask because I only had my bird for a few days and I let mine out today. I'm a novice with these birds and mine isn't hand tame either.

Re: When can I let my IRN out for the first time?
Ah thanks.. This bird has taken me by surprise and been better than I thought. Perhaps he is only 5months old and learning quickly. This evening he has given out 4 single squeaks, which is quite loud but luckily (or unluckily, whichever way you take it) I'm deaf to high pitched noises. Which also me...

Re: When can I let my IRN out for the first time?
After an hours exploration he took himself back into his cage for a slice of Apple, a monkey nut and a nap. The only thing he is wary of is my hands.. And the only thing I'm wary of is this bird is too intelligent for his own good! It's all trial and error for me, and I hope I don't mess him up. I'l...

Re: When can I let my IRN out for the first time?
I'm too scared to let the budgie out as one nip from the irn could kill or seriously wound him. But seeing the budgie on my hand and shoulder would prove to him that I'm not the enemy. The budgie could be a useful training aid. They look like their snogging, but the budgie is definitely passing seed.

Re: When can I let my IRN out for the first time?
Well, I let him out lol He goes between the top of his cage (which is open) and the budgie cage (which he is fascinated with this little bird). The budgie is talking to him and feeding him between the bars. I'm not so sure this is a good thing? Anyway, he smacked into the window twice and soon learn...

When can I let my IRN out for the first time?
This is the third day since bringing my bird home and he is eager to get out. He is restless and constantly climbing round and round his cage. He is taking treats I drop in his food bowl, but won't come near my hand for one. He does however come up close to me as his cage is next to my chair, so he ...

Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
These are all descendants from domestic birds. Legend has it some escaped from a film set, others say a breeding pair were released by Jimi Hendrix (which he did as it was filmed) as a symbol of peace. Luckily they were green. As I much prefer native animals, as nature intended. I don't rate cross b...

Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
Your research is right. A few years back I personally witnessed wild IRN Parakeets raiding garden fruit trees in Croydon, on the edge of London. They swoop in like fighter jets and swiftly move through the trees taking what they like. They very quickly move on. They know the best trees and was great...

Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
Ok, thanks. I'll try them.
The breeder told me to keep clear of fresh fruit and veg as it makes them ill. I was informed to feed him cockatiel mix. This didn't sound right to me and went against what I researched.

Can't upload a pic from the link.. This site said it's too spammy for a new user. And i can't upload from camera roll as the file is too big and I can't reduce it.

Thanks for the link Donovan.. I'll try to upload a pic without registering to see what happens and maybe sign up if it works (it failed first attempt). Watch this space. Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
I might call it missk lol.. They breeder said they suspect it's a boy. It's all green. I like the idea of India related. My father lived in India when he was a boy and he kept these birds as pets. He would shin up a tree and rob one out of a nest and drop it to his brother below! Several would peris...

Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
This bird was advertised DOB 14/12/13 so not quite 5months. He is not rung, so who knows. Could be over a year old for all I know. If I told you the story of how I got it, you'd understand why I'm suspicious of what I have been told. It contradicts a lot of what I researched. Anyway, I need to give ...

Re: Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
"What I have envisioned" now that is a good point! I'm hoping for a bird that's going to gladly sit on my shoulder and hand, not have to keep his cage shut so he can come and go as he pleases. Play with his toys and be a little mischievous by pulling threads from the lounge rug and throwin...

Hi everyone.. Thanks for your replies. I have seen this bird eating and drinking. His droppings look normal and he has sorted his own tail feathers out. I played the call of a wild IRN from my phone and he called back. It was like is flicked a switch.. Since then he looks at me curiously rather than...

Newbie with first IRN.. And it hates me!
Hi.. Am new to this site and today I bought home my first parakeet. It's in a large cage in a quiet corner of my lounge and I'll leave it alone for a few days at least to allow it to climatise. This bird is 5months old and has never been handled. And it shows. It's climbing all over its cage at the ...
