I've taught Austin not to go to the shoulder unless I move my arm towards the shoulder and allow him. The way I did it was over a period of time (like everything), each time he went to my shoulder, I put my finger infront of him and said "UP" (as this command was already taught). He would then come ...

Won't walk towards me..

Hi All, It's been a while, and Austin is growing and learning. Very well behaved except for the usual screaming on sunrise and when I'm on the phone...!!! :( Anyway, I think he's got into the habbit of us going towards his cage and picking him up. As his cage is never closed he's always curious and ...

Rewarding Treats...

Hi All, I was wondering, as Austin get's seed and fresh fruit daily, what treat's I can give him that he will love that is healthy as I want him to be rewarded with something that once he gets used to is also good for him. Originally he loved the mixed buja (which was spicy and I think pretty salty)...

Normally I'd write a long message, but the first step is very simple.. Clip it's wings It's commonly written, that if you want to train a bird it is very important that the wings are clipped otherwise they can chose to not listen to you and decide to fly away from you. That'd sort out the flying pro...

Attacking his Bell...

I guess curious if anyone has any thoughts... Austin (my IRN) is a great addition to the family, he's calm, relaxed, will go to anyone and be friendly so no complaints... But... when we put him in his cage at night or if we don't want to leave him unsupervised he really attacks his toy with the bell...

I have never had to use the gloves, I just bit my lip, so not sure on that part but there's plenty people here that will have a good idea. I recall something one of the people here wrote... Be patient, persistent and one day, it will stop... and that's what happened. Once in a while he trys to show ...

I actually go to a full size mirror so I can see him. At first I did this so I could react if he was going to bite to minimise injury (to me). He would hide behind my head, so I would tilt my head forward so he had no where to hide - my friends would laugh at me as they would see how hard it was to ...

I would suggest you don't let her back on your shoulder (for now) and as soon as she tries to go up... get her off immediately - a bit like punishment for what she did. Keep giving her positive attention and keep talking and playing with her as you do not want it to get worse.. It is very important ...

Hi AussieGirl, It's been 5 days since your post - I hope things have improved The initial attack is just your bird claiming his territory - as you are invading it - IRN's are very territorial - which is an advantage because they will one become comfortable in their own area and will not need to expl...

Something I've learnt from this site and taught my wife is how you react when your IRN lunges towards your hand, or bites or when the eyes pin.. I did a couple of things which I got from this site... 1. Persist and not react and keep saying 'up' or 'hello austin' in a cheery voice. 2. Persist I did ...

THANK YOU...!!!

Thank you so much for this service... I have been able to understand my IRN so much more and when in strife and the patience has rolled thin, searched on things like 'discipline' or biting or bluffing and learnt so much about the simple things. It has helped me more than you can believe and made Aus...

I now have dedicated poo shirts.. Austin always looks at me funny as he sees me cleaning his mess as he does it. I'm wondering that if evertime he poo's on me I put him in the cage, he might figure it out - is it worth a try? Anyway, he now 99% of time comes off my shoulder at my command of 'up' or ...

Through much patience, and pain... And no reaction to his biting, lunging it has officially stoped - unless I am forcing him (e.g. getting him off my shoulder after an hour of chilling out) 99.9% of the time he comes up but once he will put up a fight - fair enough, it's comfy up there and we chat a...

Congratulations Carrie, trust me - do the right thing, read the posts and you'll learn a heap with your new IRN. It comes down to time & patience. My wife and I work all day, we leave home about 8:00 am but he is up at sunrise (even weekends At first I thought he may have a problem with us being...

How long does the bluffing stage last?

I think I'm going through it now.... He want's out of his cage, then attacks me... I persevere through his bites then he happily gets up on my fingers and all is cool.. but it happens 90% of the time? Oh by the way, once Austin is relaxed - all he does is groom himself... Any help would be great.. T...

Keeps going up to my shoulder..

Hi, I think I made the mistake of letting Austin up on my shoulder... I did this when i first got him so that he would be comfortable and be close. Now that's the only place he wants to go to when he comes to me from his cage.. He won't sit on my fingers anymore, just wants to go to the shoulder. Do...

Working All Day...

Hi there, I've only recently got my beautiful hand reared IRN - now officially named Austin. It's been two full days and he's eating his apples and even went through the mix and picked out all the sunflower seeds which is exciting because the day before he didn't even touch them (I guess his curiosi...

Only likes Apples..

Hi, Only had my IRN for a day now and the breeder said make sure you have apples for him as he loves them. I woke up this morning and noticed he had munched away on his apples, but nothing else has even been touched... I've got him the small parrot mix, and a parrot mix bar, but only the apples were...

Yellow IRN Joins the family

Hi, We've just got a new addition to the family. Our new Yellow IRN <yet to be named> it's between Austin & Oscar however my wife wants a more exotic name. He's only 10 weeks old and was hand reared by a very affectionate breeder which is excellent becasue 'Austin' is very freindly in the handli...
