Re: just got my first irn!

For treats to train with I use the seeds from Honey Dew Melons, they are big and dry out really well once washed, and the birds will do anything for them Hi, Is there a trick to drying seeds, do you dry in the sun, bench or oven? Maybe I should ask this question in another topic? Kiwi.relichunter

Re: Acorns and natural nuts?

That is a sensible sounding article, I will check out birdsafe looks like a worthwhile site to visit. May consider being brave, as ours is a traditional Oak tree - and would be the best branches for perches for the aviary. Otherwise I'll have to go bush at a friends place and find some Manuka (tea t...

Re: Aviary Floor/Substrate

Thank you both, We have been given the aviaries and there are a couple of holes that we were going to patch at the bottom. We are have decided to go with concrete tiles. The galv wire on the aviaries is less approx 1 - 1.5cm square so pretty small. I'm going to go round this weekend and do what I ca...

Re: popcorn strings

I forgot to say the funny tubular spaghetti works particularly well, because it doesn't break as easily as normal spaghetti.

Re: Acorns and natural nuts?

Hi, I too would have liked to use Oak for perches and Acorns for fun as this is one of the biggest trees on our property. However, when I did a search a while back I found it very confusing - some sites said Acorns were safe but others marked the Oak, acorns and foliage as toxic. http://www.avianweb...

Re: popcorn strings

Hi Ellie,

I string popcorn for Jack on a piece of dried spagetti - then stick it upright in an apple. Haven't had any trouble with it so far, hope its okay to do, he seems to like nibbling on the dried spaghetti too.

Re: Hi from NZ

Thanks Ellie, Our hand raised conure also knows how to bite occasionally when he has a point to make, but usually only does the odd nibble. Our ringnecks are parent raised, and will be arriving home next weekend, as they weaned a couple of weeks ago, but we wanted to ensure they were eating well on ...

Re: Krishna is Krazy about Kranberries!

Hi Again, I'm crazy about our NZ Parrots and he Kakapo are incredible looking bird, but I'm also a fan of our Kea, Kaka and Kakariki - all have their own charm - we don't have the colourful parrots here in NZ but they do have some character - not that you always think like that when a kea decides t...

Re: Aviary Floor/Substrate

Hi,

I hadn't thought of using wooden deck - that would actually be one of the easiest for us to build a small deck to put aviaries on as my hubby's brother is a carpenter. Would that make an good aviary base or is the concrete floor better, we can manage either.?

Aviary Floor/Substrate

Hi, I've searched through but can't seem to find anything on this - hope I've done it right. We have been given two small avairies 1.2m x 2.1m (hoping they are big enough for now to house two 3 or possibly IRNs in each). Before the babies move in, we want to set them up to give the healthiest enviro...

Hi from NZ

Hi, We are owned by one 12 month old Sun Conure, who replaced a much loved Fischer Love Bird. When we bought the Sun we were actually looking to get a Ringneck as I think they are so Elegant looking, but were then put off by the Pet Shop as being not suitable with kids (ours are 9 &11) because t...
