Been a hard slog but am finally beginning to make progress with him. Got a clicker trainer and have been using this with seemingly great succes...

Progress update Folks I spoke to a parrot behaviour specialist tonight and she had a great idea.....Use an empty 2 litre juice bottle, cut the bottom off it, make some slits up the bottle (bottom to about half way and tape the bottom so it narrows....Remove the label and insert your hand into it.......

Yeah its my first IRN. Had a budgie years ago. Good to know it is not just me that is encountering these issues. And you are 100% correct it does make you wonder whether it is you or not. But im not giving up. He is definately not scared of us, infact I am starting to think he is dominant over us, a...

Sherry, Thanks....Was considering the buddy perch but was unsure how effective it would be. I cant work him out at all, he is not scared of us, keeps landing on both of us. He landed on my knee tonight. When I didnt have a treat for him his seemed to make a beeline for my hands. He did the same to m...

Confidence Shrinking + Biting getting worse. Please help
Hey folks, (sorry about the big post) Well recently I dont think things have been going very well, I now feel that I am actually causing him too bite each time I try to get him to step up. Due to me not being completely confident of picking him up, and the lack of successful attempts. Even getting h...

Wendy + Sky Sounds like this is the same as my ringie, He was great at first as well but started biting more and more often. Now each time he sees the hand unless distracted he bites. My Ring is almost the same age and has been biting harder and harder each time. Now its getting to the stage where I...

I dont really agree with wing clipping either.... but on the other hand im sure it does have its uses under certain circumstances. Birds are meant to fly about. My ringie loves nothing more than doing laps of the room during a crazy 10 minute spree. Im sure if you let him out for a while he will get...

Hi, Yes I would definately move them as a first stage and give them some clean food a shallow dish of water for them to clean themselves. If the conditions are as bad as you say get them out into a clean cage with fresh food and water as soon as possible. Get them to a vat as soon as you can to get ...

You could change your cage for one that you can access foodbowls without opening any doors. I saw one on another thread regarding pictures of cages for about £40 that would be perfect. Then you can control when you let him out. Also, have you just got the ringie, because it is natural that they will...

Made some real progress tonight Worked out that if I make a fist and he cant really see my fingers he gives a wee nibble, then when i nudge him he steps up with no treat, and then is getting rewarded. Think that is the mistake I was making, letting him see the treat before getting him to step up...D...

Yeah they are very loud vocal birds. Try not to give him too much attention if he is very noisy, or he may scream for attention. Sit next to the cage and talk to him gently is the first stage. Maybe try leaving the door open and leave a treat close. He will come out when he feels comfortable around ...

Don't matter about his pupils. Just keep trying with the perch, over time you can then say if it really works or not. Hang in there. :D Trying to hang in....Not easy sometimes Tried him with the treat again last night to see what would happen and sure enough was absolutely perfect...Let me stroke h...

Sorry if im stating the obvious here but.. Is the seed mix ok? damp seed can be very bad. Maybe has been stored badly at the shop, Have you been removing the seeds from the apples and grapes. Quite new to this myself but believe these seeds are not good for them. Also, have you been buying organic f...

True, he might be bluffing. Using a treat or chew toy to divert his beak and keep handling him until the bluffing settles. then introduce with the hand and no treat gradually. That is fine, its up to you really. :) But what Sky said seems like a great plan with the perch. :D Yet with the buddy perc...

Progress Update Well I actually tend to think he is bluffing now, I got a good look at his eyes in daylight today and you can see the pupils of his eyes are very small. (about a third of the full size), this does not change when I shade his eyes from daylight. He is very noisy at the moment, and bit...

Biting me when not given a treat
All seems to be going well with my ringneck been 3 weeks now, I usually let him out for 30 ins or so then try to handle him. he steps onto my finger when I have a treat for him, sits next to us and will let me stroke him while eating a treat, and is landing on our heads & sits cleaning our hair ...

How Much Should I feed a Day?
Can anyone help with how much I should be feeding my IRN. I rotate his food, giving him egg food one day small amount of seed the next, and trying to get him to eat the organic food from harrisons, but he wont eat it yet. Only had him a week and happy that he is eating and settling well. I'm rotatin...

Is my ringneck bluffing or settling?
I have a 7 week old blue ring-neck. Have had him almost a week. He will sometimes step onto my finger (with a little nudge on his feet), first few days were great (no bites) and has just started to take a treat from my finger last night. (piece of chicken) lol he loved that so seems i am building tr...

Help and Advice please, New ringneck owner
Hi, I come from Edinburgh and have just got a 7 week old Hand reared Blue Ring-neck on Saturday. Bit of background first..... I got him from about a 3 hour drive home covered in a cage with a dish-towel after this he was very settled all the way home. I let him out in the same room as his cage for a...
