1.It may be the SHAPE of the food that is scaring him. I know this sounds silly, but you might try making things LOOK like seeds - small round shapes. And mix it in with his seed. Things that are soft can be chopped fine and roll it between your palms to round it into little beads. 2. is he afraid o...

I think it is GREAT that you are asking before buying. I agree a pair of cockatiels might be easiest IF she doesnt have allergies or lung problems. The pair would provide each other affection. Most well raised IRNs DO want human contact - and it would be a shame to get her any bird that craves conta...

Any new reason for him to be jealous of another creature - like a new bird? i notice my IRN definitely gets irritated if she sees me paying attention to another bird or animal. Also mine seems to have a minimum amount of required human contact every day to keep her mellow. If she doesnt get her quot...

My IRN LOVES LOVES LOVES the hairdryer - good bonding trick?

I have a young rescue IRN about 1 year old now. I have had her for about 4 months now. We have made steady but slow bonding progress. Well last week I was drying my hair after a shower using a blow dryer. I had a towel around my neck. She was sitting on the vanity counter watching. I keep her with m...

OK its gone further now. She now climbs up under my sweatshirt, crawls over to my chest to my shoulder and then crawls down my long sleeve (its loose fitting). She stops just before the end of the sleeve at my wrist and lays down peering out the end of my shirt sleeve. When the dog comes over and i ...

I would NOT use pyrethrin. No way. Even though natural(from a flower) it is deadly poison. Especially if the birds eat the insects that are killed by it. The advantage of pyrethrin is that it breaks down relatively quickly after it is used - but until it does it is poisonous. And i dont know how muc...

instant oatmeal - a big favorite

I know others have mentioned oatmeal, but it bears repeating. My IRN absolutely LOVES instant banana-bread flavored oatmeal with frozen wild blueberries mixed in it before you microwave it. She wolfs this down like crazy. Just dont make it too thick or they might choke on it given how fast mine eats...

our IRN is part KANGAROO

So our female IRN was playing in my lap while i was seated. Just to see what she would do I reached down and pulled up the end of my t-shirt so she was now covered in a pouch formed by the shirt. She immediately laid down and proceeded to chirp very happily. She stayed there for like an hour occassi...

Its a Geranium. One of my other hobbies is gardening. Geraniums flowers are commonly used in human cooking. "SCENTED GERANIUM (Pelargonium sp.)--This is a tender perennial usually grown for its scented leaves. Scented geraniums come in many "flavors," ranging from rose to nutmeg to le...

VERY affectionate new IRN

So we got our first IRN from rescue. 20 months old and female I think. She instantly bonded to me, a male of the human species (but doesnt want attention from anyone else). Anyway, I place her on my shoulder and she sits there with her head as tight against my neck as possible and continually chirps...

HOT? - A cheap way to cool off your birds

If you cannot afford airconditioning, you might want to consider a misting evaporative cooler. These can lower temperature about 10-20 degrees depending on temp and humidity. an online seller with pictures (i have never used this company) m You can find these at garden centers(Lowes, Home Depot) or ...

does pelvis shape tell you the sex of an IRN?

The lady we got our new IRN from said that it was a female based on the shape of the pelvis. She claimed that females had a wider pelvis and males had a narrow one.

No DNA done. no ring - an albino. 20 months old.

The bird ACTS like a female...

what do these sounds mean?

We just got our first IRN. It makes a number of sounds and I was wondering if anyone had any translations? 1. When petted she makes a clucking/chirping sound. I assume this is a contentment sound? 2. When in her cage she makes a single chirrurp! sound - I assume this is a "come here" or &q...
