Tips on Training?

Hello! I recently got my new Ringneck (Actually my first) and he is such a sweetheart. But he is a little bit nippy. He does not like to step up out of his cage or off of his play perch. He also tries to bite if you try to pet him. Any tips on how to stop this behavior?

He needs to trust you, sit next to his cage when you eat, offer tidbits through the bars (walnut halves are much loved), but don't try touching him just yet, nipping is saying "back off".
