Hi We just got a IRN 3 days ago, his name is Sam, the lady we got him from said he is under a year old.. Is there a way to tell how old they are?? Ok the thing is he squacks ALL day long when he is in his cage in the livingroom where everyone else is. If he is in the bedroom in his cage by himself he dont make a sound. why is this???? he also chews his talons constantly. is there something wrong??? and he rubs his beak on his grit purch and is making his beak look ruff and scuffed up. we had a mirror in his cage and he started acting mean if we touched his mirror or if he even thought we were going to touch it. he does like to be held, he loves to sit on my shoulder and on my head and play with my hair. Also his tail feather are short and "scraggaly" looking, he dont pull at them or anything but at the petstore he was caged side by side with about 20-30 other birds. he is beautiful and all his feathers are beautiful exept his tail feathers, what could have caused this? and will they grow back??

He's likely at least two and a half to three years old, since he already has a ring.
After they get the ring, I can't tell their age.

If he's yelling when he's around everyone, it might be too much hustle and bustle for him, if he was used to a quieter environment. The bedroom might be a better location for his cage. Or, try covering the back and half the cage to give him a sense of security in the livingroom. He can get used to the changes, it just takes time.

Chewing his talons is usually a nervous habit, if it's constantly. That's another reason why I think he's screaming from too much sensory overload.

Make sure his grooming perch isn't the highest in the cage, they normally clean their beaks on the highest perch, or the one nearest the food.

And take the mirror away. Some birds just can't have a mirror and still be nice to us. Sometimes it's a particular toy even.
Perhaps he was beginning to view it as his mate.

As for his tail feathers, he was either in a too small cage and his feathers rubbed and broke on the bars, or the neighboring birds clipped them off. They should be fine when he molts and loses his old feathers and replaces them with new. As long as his now cage is large enough. His tail feathers will be longer than his body length.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, YOU HELPED A TON!!!!! AND A LOT OF HIS BEHAVIOUR IS UNDERSTOOD NOW . BUT HE WAS IN A PET STORE WITH A LOT OF OTHER BIRDS AND IT WAS REALLY LOUD, AND ITS MUCH MUCH QUITER HERE IN OUR HOME. SO THE SQEELING WHILE HE IS IN HIS CAGE I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND. But people move.... differently. Spastic. And now he doesn't have his flock to feel hidden in, just one of the crowd.

Or maybe he missed the noise? I can't tell you, lol.

Melika could be right about missing the noise, if you started talking but not to Max - phone was a particular thing - he would get louder and louder trying to talk over you.

Especially when travelling in the car - he loved it and got really rowdy!
