Nah, don't think so - looks too waxy in the leaves.
My tree is around 14 metres high and more like a birch or something similar but not sure - leaves aren't right for that.
Might have to check with garden centre.
...actually not my tree, I just chop branches off

this is Populus alba, common name is aspen ( i found the name in dictionary). ( for THE THIRD PIC with the 2 color leaves i am sure, are all pics from the same tree?)
i dont know for birds, i think is safe, but many animals like goats, sheeps eat this.

yeah all same pics ta. went to garden centre but leaves were too old and dry by the time I got there (ma & pa were supposed to take them 2 days ago!!).
I am reasonably satisfied they are OK as Max used to have no problem with them but Ziggy just a bub so being careful

An aspen in New Zealand? Wow, they travel far...

I wish I knew, I'm only familiar with our trees locally, as a landscaper. :/

Edit: Initially, it looked like a ficus to me, lol. But if it's native to New Zealand, it isn't a ficus. As far as I know, you don't have any native ficus trees.

After looking through a list of broad leafed trees native to New Zealand, I couldn't find anything similar, lol.

It drives me crazy when I can't figure out what a a plant is... lol. xD

Your best identifying features when you go to the nursery would be (including the leaf/branch sample): flowering/non-flowering; colour of flower; fruit producing/non-fruit producing; and bark colour

Does a ficus have fruit? These trees don't.
Is not a native as it loses its leaves in winter, so some sort of import

ficus produce flowers and fruits but in warmer environments.
In greece ficus dont flower, i think the same in NZ.
Ficus also have its leaves all the year, aspen is not and aspen in spring flowers ( something like dust feathers, white, it seems like snowing around, in greece this is in summer)

There are too many kinds of ficus (over 600 species) to say, lol. A fig is a type of ficus, so you could say a ficus can flower and have fruit. But not all do (most don't). Most are evergreen, though some are deciduous.

There are no native deciduous trees in NZ? Weird. But then again, everything down that way is! xD

I would like to know if they are aspens, that would be fascinating. All aspens have white bark, I believe.

I will take a sample into a garden centre next week and find out for once and for all

The Kowhai is a native - and deciduous (so don't anyone listen to me ever again on leafy woody planty things - cos really that's the extent of my knowledge).

The funniest thing is I have one in my garden....ahem!

...it is only a baby one tho and hasn't been through a winter yet, so a bit of an excuse.

Anyway - what do I know about trees?!? heh heh - I know little enough about birds!!
