Boy or girl?

Post by Meg.E »

I bought a green IRN a few months ago, not exactly sure how old he (which is just what I call him because I'm not sure whether he is a boy or girl) is. At the moment he has some slightly brighter and lighter feathers on the back of his neck, and slightly darker feathers around the front of his neck (the places he would get a ring later on if he were a boy). I want to know everyones thoughts on whether he might be a girl or a boy. I'll try to get some photos of him in the next couple of days if that will help :)

Hey Meg.E,

The only way to sex your ringneck is through DNA. It can be done here: http://www.avianbiotech.com

But i will say that i am very good at sexing my babies i have hand fed. :) I can always tell the bird's sex by their behavior, skull shape, and feet. The males have a more angular face, smaller toes, and are much more "dopey." The females have wider feet, almost always respond to my calls with a quick tilt, have wider skulls, and are much more alert as juveniles. Keep in mind these are my observations  . I have not been wrong so far and i have not had 2 DNA sex my baby ringnecks.

Also, you can checkout an article i wrote here: http://www.indianringneck.com/sexing/

Hope this helps!

Best Wishes, IMRAN-C

Thank you for your help! I will look into getting him DNA tested but for the moment I will look at some of the smaller details you have mentioned. :)
