Blind IRN

Hi people

Well today I went to buy some bird seed at the bird shop and happened to spot an IRN in a cage. I knew something wasnt quite right with it so I asked what his story was. Apparently he came in with a purchase of aviary IRNs, but they noticed something was wrong and separated him. Were almost certain he is blind & handraised, to what extent we cant know (though im sure he has partial vision), but despite how traumatic it must be to be a blind bird, he is amazingly content and calm. Theres no way I could leave him behind.

So my question is:

How can I give this bird quality of life? What tips do you have so that I can give stability and confidence in himself?

Hes sitting with me preening and falling asleep, and responds very positively to my voice, so although im sure ive got myself a challenge hes not a lost cause.

Thanks :D

I will start by saying the world needs more people like you!!

Now i dont agree with what i am about to advise normaly but with partile eye site here gos.

Clip his wing so he doesnt hit someting and kill himself until you can access his eye site, if its good enough then let them grow out!.

Set his cage/stand exactly where you want it and never move it as it will be his navigation point of judgement he will know after time where everything is from that point.

not much else to say other then good luck.

Thanks Glenn

I have clipped his wings, I believe its in his best interest at the moment. He seems to be able to see basic shapes/objects and movement. Hes even brave enough to jump short distances. But if I hold my hand still near him, he just doesnt know its there. Ive noticed his pupils are in fixed dilation. He seems to pin his eyes in an attempt to focus on things rather than his pupils automatically adjusting. After he settles in I might get him to the vet to see if we can find some answers.

Thanks again for your help, Ive got bright orange food and water dishes for him too, hopefully it helps him out.

Yer i think the water bowl colour will help but if its colour blind then it wont matter hence why setting it up exactly where u want it and leave it there should help.

He hould be really trusting as he wont be able to find his food.

Again good luck.
