He looks normal:) I can't type too much because i bit my fingernail so badly but it looks as if he is going through a molt. No need to worry. His new feathers are growing in and he should get that smooth look in about a month:)

I'm glad you said that because I thought he looked normal too.

If there are specific patches of his feathers you are worried about, perhaps you should take a close up of them?

His colouring his really interesting. I've never seen anything like it.

One of my IRNs hates the spray mist too. It freaks her out. The other one likes it.

Sometimes if you splash the water in a bowl with your fingers, they will take a bath in it. Maybe it is bathing in its water bowl when you are not there?

I take our two into the shower. They have their own perches (the perches have suction cups on them) and they let me know if they want to get wet or not. If they want to get wet, they sit on my arms and they get wet from the spray - not directly from the jets... although one of our birds will sometimes walk deliberately into the jets to get wet, the other just likes the spray.

I was going to say the same thing. He looks fine! Maybe moulting a bit but thats all normal. Is it the colour of his plumage that you think makes him look ragged? Because that is just his color. Many birds dont like bathing. Some prefer different types of baths. My male prefers his bath tub (shallow container of water) but my female used to love having showers with me! Both of them hate being misted, but I do mist them in the summer when its hot and they refuse to bathe. Try giving him a shallow container of water, you could take him to the shower with you so he can watch you.

as for his feathers are you sure hes chewing them? not just grooming himself?
his feathers look fine to me but he does look a little "fluffed up in a couple of your pics he could just be cold my disabled bird fluffs up like that when shes cold

i think he is just grooming--let me get some pictures of Archimedes right now--as he is having a really bad molt. How long have you had him? Do you have pictures of him when you first purchased him?

Here is Archimedes with a bad molt. It's quite normal--he looks nothing like this in his best conditions. Right now he looks patchy and there are straws which are the new feathers coming out.

I think my Mikey is going through a molt to. He is looking a little ragged. I don't remember, what age do they usually go through a molt. Bullet went through a few weeks ago, and now her feathers look nice and smooth.

Phew! I began to get a bit of hypochondria then when I saw those pictures in the first post. I thought of the molt that mine are coming through now.

One thing i've been doing over the past couple of months is to find a way of putting a dish of sorts into their cage (I used an Ice Cream tub and a couple of spare perches), and then filled it with water. Then i'd hoover the house and my two would bathe themselves completely.

Yes, there would be water all over the floor every time the hoover comes out but they do a very good job of cleaning themselves and are then quiet while grooming for about an hour afterwards.

That's a good way to motivate yourself to do the vacuuming! lol
