The babys to choose from (photos added)

Post by ranechild »

I have a choice of two violet blue birds to get for my pet. One is very evenly violet all over, the other has some blue or green on his back and blue on his neck and blue in his tail. I was wondering what the difference is between these two bird genetically? Is one maybe a DF violet and one an SF violet? Also, the blue looks almost green on the back of the less violet bird... opinions? (It's most evident in the last picture.) Is it just because these bird just had a shower and is wet or could it be that there is another genetic factor in the bird?

Since you can now upload pics, would you be able to take some pics avoiding the sunlight?, somewhere in the shade perhaps? and before shower :D

Do you know the parents of these birds?
Both parents have to carry violet to be able to get a DF Violet, and if they were, just take the darker violet.

If indeed there's green (i can't see in your pics) on it's back then i assume it is a Turquoise Violet... more pics pls

From the pics you posted looks like a turquoiseviolet to me. I can see the green on the chest and the back. My df violet is violet all over

if only for a pet - choose the one you fancy the most. - I, like Ben couldn't see any green on the birds (but not to say it isn't there) I'd also choose the darker Violet over the lighter one.

I've circled where I saw the green. But like sheyd said, if its only a pet choose whichever one you fall in love with.

I think that's just the light reflecting off of the pics- would need to see some more without the birds being wet and in the sun

So here are some pictures in the dry, unfortunately you can't see any of the questionable green spots in these... The one with question spots is in the back of these pictures. The one in the front seems a little darker in the head. Last picture helps to see the difference in the tails--so does the first wet picture.

They are such cuties. I know he'll only be a pet, but I'm interested to learn the genetics and this is my only first hand opportunity so far :)

Can't see any of the green now lol. Did you find out the parentage? Do both parents carry the violet gene? If they are in fact DF violets, choose the one with the darker flights and overall darker color. And if they are dna sexed, i guess choose by whether you would like a male or female. They are both cuties regardless :)

wait a minute... I might see something...

Green? Maybe he could be a Turquoise Violet Blue. I'll check on the parents now. I know there were also many Turquoise babies available with the same breeder... I think it to be likely.

Turq violet is a very pretty color. One of my favorites :) pics are just not going to show everything. I've tried to capture how dark my boys head is and no matter what light I'm in it never shows. But if you are confident that you see green, then go under the assumption, if you don't know the parents, that it is a turq violet. Are you planning on breeding in the future?

When wet the structure in the feather cannot work as it should to reflect blue colours to our eyes. All Blue IRNs will look green in part depending on how soaked that part of the bird is.

So here are some more pictures. I'm pretty convinced he's got a turquoise gene. The lowest row of flights... or I could still be imagining things.

I don't see Turquoise (it isn't there in the parents anyway, and is dominant to Blue)

What colour were the Albino hen's parents?- as unless she is a Violet Blue Ino, then DF Violet is not possible.
