My ringneck has just laid an egg

Hi All,

I've got 2 sibling ringnecks, 1 male, 1 female. They were separated for a while, but then I got them together as the owner of the female didn't want her anymore (not sure if that makes a difference, just thought I'd point that out).

I've placed a box in their cage a while ago, and we now have an egg. What should we do with it? Should I leave it there, and let them take care of it? Or give it to someone who has an incubator?

Should I expect more eggs in the coming days?

Please reply ASAP as I've got no clue

It's more of an assumption really, both came from the same pet store at the same age.

I wouldn't want to scar them for the rest of their life though. I remember my cat went mental when one of her kittens died. Don't birds react the same?

I have no idea.. I'm sure they would be a bit stressed out from it. You could always call the place where you got them from and see if they're directly related. If not related, let them have a go at it Just make sure you're prepared to hand feed babies should something happen and the parents don't want to feed them or if you want to pull them from the nest to keep or sell as pets.

The petshop is a bit unorganised, wouldn't be able to get that information.

Should I just risk it since she's already laid one? I would be prepared to hand feed, as I already did it with one of the two I've got and am comfortable with that.

Hi Muziq,

Coming from the same pet store and being of the same age doesnt neccesarily mean that they are siblings. I thin you should let them incubate the egg and take the chance. And since you are ready to hand feed, i dont find any reason why you should not let them go ahead. All the best.

Thanks, I decided to let them go ahead. Someone told me they might not hatch as it's a bit early since it's still a bit cold over here. How long would it normally take them to hatch?

Hi Muziq,

If you know about candling the eggs, you can candle them after a week and check if they are fertile. I dont think the outside whether will effect the eggs if they are properly incubated by the hen. With early, do you mean that the birds are not fully matured????

I was told breeders expect eggs around end of March here. I live in Malta, we don't have central heating and it's a bit humid, so the cold is felt in the house as well. It was just a pointer I was given really, they didn't tell me to expect the worst or anything. But I'd prefer knowing what to expect.

I believe they are matured yes. The male's had a prominent ring around his neck for nearly a year now.

For some reason I remember it being a 23 day incubation period.

Hi Muziq,

First candle your eggs after 8 days. Do some research on candling. There is lot of stuff available online.

Candling is much more simple than some of those sites make it out to be!

You don't need to build a whole box candling set up, you just need a good flashlight. I got the LED one, I forget the strength but it was about $20. Just take the egg into a dark room, hold the egg between your thumb and forefinger and shine the flashlight under it while you rotate the egg around. At 8 days, the baby would be pretty visible
