My bird looks very sick, need help

Post by Akiko »

Hello I have a ringneck parakeet, age unknown but he seems like over 2years old.
He is not tamed but has been eating well and seemed comfortable in cage, inside house.
His beak doesn't get trimmed naturally so he is going to get it trimmed at vet for second time soon.

His behaviour has changed last few days. He is not chirping in the morning and evenings like he always did,
stopped eating his favorite millet spray. Last night he became very weak and struggled to balance himself on perch, ladder and on the floor. Very unsteady on feet and fell over several times. still seems to have appetite but decreased appetite.
Not vomiting or having diarrhoea but he is weak and not active as before.
Would love to take him to vet but it is public holiday here and I don't think there is 24hour vet in this small town and there is no bird specialist in this town....

Is there anything I can do to make him feel better?

Hi Akiko

Unfortunately, there is probably very little that can be done for your bird. By the time they get sick that you can notice something is wrong, it is often too late. The only first aid I can tell you is to put a lamp or heat lamp near his cage. My understanding is that when a bird is fighting illness it has problems regulating it's body temperature and needs more heat than normal. So even if it is warm where you are, a lamp / heat lamp can help. You just need to put it in such a way that the bird can get closer or further away from it if it desires (you don't want to unintentionally overheat).

You'll be in my thoughts.

Ellie.

Thank you very much, ellieelectrons.
Sad that I couldn't pick up the sign of illness earlier...
I do my best to keep him warm and offer his favorite food.

Thank you very much, willowisp71.
I have moved all the perches and food container etc to lower position to avoid him falling from great height as Vet told me on the phone. I also placed cloth to make lower ceiling to avoid him to climb too high in the cage.
Glad to see he is still eating some food and grooming himself although he is struggling to balance.
He is not tamed so I talk to him from distance and try not to scare him.

Taking him to vet this afternoon. Hope things go well for him.

Vet said there is no signs of infection, it could be consussion so that his movement is not coordinated but not confirmed yet.
He was horrified to be handled but once he got back into the cage he got settled.
Still unsteady on feet and falling over often, he is getting more active.
And his appetite is much better :)
Having dificulty holding food in his claw because of unsteady feet but he is coping well.

I am so glad to see him trying to get better. Hope he gets better soon.

It has been about 2weeks since my bird Mellow started showing his illness, he is still unsteady on feet and falls over often but he is eating like back to normal, and looks alot comfortable and happier. I am going to continue keeping him in the lower half of the cage untill his balance improves and give him good food and fresh water.
