New bird - very skiddish - help!!

Post by sc10211975 »

So I had another IRN for 2 yrs who was adorable & very friendly. Sadly, he died a few mos ago for reasons I'm still trying to figure out. In any case, I just bought a new IRN yesterday. He's 3 mos old & is VERY skiddish. He goes crazy in the cage when I attempt to reach my hand in. Today, he jumped off the cage so I went over to pick him up & put him back & I had to chase him around for 10 min, finally got him only for him to thrash around trying to get loose & be the crap out of my finger. I don't know what to do to get him to calm down to where I can handle him. Any tips?

doesnt sound like the bird has been handled. Did you buy it as a handled bird?

I honestly don't know...I assumed so since it was a breeder who I bought him from. Wouldn't they have to handle him to feed him?

They may have handled him to feed him but only for that purpose. The bird may not have been handled well and in a comfortable manner nor gently. I have many birds here who are now just aviary birds because "breeders" sold them as handraised birds - not tame birds.
