nest box material

Post by riantango08 »

is it ok to use hay in the bottom of the nest box,the kind that u use for rabbits bedding
i have hay in there at the moment and my females have been in and out of their boxes that last couple of days,is the hay ok or should i change it to wood shavings,or will this upset their breeding.

Hi
Basically anything will do,if they dont like it they will remove it from the nest which is good you know but you need something in the box otherwise eggs roll about and young can get spawled legs as there is nothing to hold onto.
I have used sugar cane mulch but it turns powdery easy which also is not great for the young.Untreated wood shavings is best as it stay together, just make sure its untreated shavings.
Best of luck for breeding season.

I agree with Coastal-Birds, if they hate it they will ignore
the box or simply remove the stuff. :)
