Greetings from New Orleans!

Post by Emdela »

Greetings! I'm a new bird mom to this lovely baby Zazu! He or she 3 months old and loves to give me kisses already! In your opinion do you think Zazu is a male or female? I'm going to do a DNA test on my baby but i'm scared to pluck one of the feathers or to make him bleed. is there an easy way to do it without him becoming mad or scared of me?

Hi Emdela

Welcome to the forum.

At that age it's difficult to tell if it's male or female.

I've had all my birds that wasn't mature when I got them surgically sexed by an avian vet. What the vet does is knock the bird out with some sort of gas for a few minutes, then puts an endoscope through a little hole in the bird's body to see if it's male or female. After a few minutes the gas works out and the bird simply wakes up. In your case since Sazu is apparently tame it would be a lot less stressful for him/her and you since there's no catching involved.

I hope this helps.
