foraging toys for chickens
Hi All
My friend has two hens that she keeps in her backyard. They have a reasonable size run but they used to let them "free-range" quite a bit until one of their young hens got bitten by a snake and died. So now, they only let them "free-range" when they are out with them and can watch them. My friend was asking me about things that could keep them occupied in their chicken run. She has a worm farm and she loves it when she feeds them some worms. I thought she could try putting the worms in a Kong toy. Does anyone else have any foraging ideas for chickens?
Ellie.

Thanks Claire - that's exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of. I forwarded her your link. I also sent her these:

Ellie, pet store at Noosa civic has treat balls for chickens! I bought one today for my friends chooks. They had no foraging toys for parrots, which was what I was looking for.

I'm tempted to give Sapphire a go on the chicken treat ball before I give it to my friends, but I'm having flash backs to when I got my border collie a similar toy- she loved the toy but never ate the treats so our whole house got coated in dog treats before I stopped refilling it!
Re: foraging toys for chickens
I gave my dogs one of these with peanut butter schmeared on the inner ball. They did eat the peanut butter, but they were not very talented rolling it around, and the house got coated in oily PB residue. Of note, this was not really a fun toy for them.

I bought one. Unfortunately they only had one left. I'll give it to my friend with chickens on Tuesday. She's got two adults and recently got two chicks.
