Thanks Nil. My goal isn’t to eliminate soy, I just want it cut down. I’m sure I eat way too much, much more than I need. It’s in everything, from the cereal I eat, to the pellet I feed my birds. I think it’s a case of a little is enough for me, and for my birds, since they don’t need it, it may be b...

Alana8819, being vegan, I have been eating soy for years, so when I read the links above, I really started to wonder about it’s safety for birds AND humans. This article http://www.missionislam.com/health/dangers_of_soy.htm , although found in a unlikely place, has convinced me to limit soy as much ...

Why veggie?
Nil, my involvement with animal, reptile, and parrot adoptions let me see first hand how cold, unfeeling, and brutally cruel we humans can be. When animals are killed for human consumption, the pain, fear, and desperation to survive that all animals have should be reason enough, but most of us choos...

Whose training who?
I wanted to share two little training techniques I used with our parrots and conures, very simple, but they worked well. Our mini macaw who was afraid of hands would let me scratch her head for a few seconds and then would take a nip. She loves to interact verbally, and we make a chipmunk kind of ch...

Norma Jean is home!
Norma Jean is home! I picked her up yesterday afternoon. She was being fostered by the director of PEAC. Her flock is impressive, and inspiring. The first room had her two amazons. One was hanging upside down and talking and whistling up a storm. He stretched his foot out through the bars to shake h...

Thanks nil
Thanks nil. I actually eat some of them myself, not to bad, but I’m use to that "healthy crap"! Never thought to mention organic, that’s almost all my birds get. There is a co-op that I shop at right on my way home from work that has all organic fruits and vegetables, and a nice "bulk...

cookie bird treat recipe
Try this cookie bird treat recipe. This recipe is modified from a vegan cookie recipe I tried. They were awful, but they inspired me to make this one for my birds. I think I’ll call them "Norma Jeans". My flock LOVE them! In a food processor; apple sauce, unsweetened ½ cup Bananas, ripe 2 ...

informal "contest" to help parrot adoptions
Hi all. I’ve been looking for reference material for some water color paintings and maybe a relief carving of a parrot. If you have a really good PIC of one of your flock I would love to see it. PLEASE don’t post them here! They need to be nice clear PICS, maybe in flight, a cute pose, a nice pose o...

Reptiles where my first love, so to speak… Brings back both good and bad memories. The wife and I were involved in the local herpetological society. We did rescues and helped with adoptions. At one time (before the parrots) we had eight iguanas two juveniles and six large adults, four uromastix, One...

teaching older bird new words?
Got to wait until Saturday to get Norma Jean (IRN). We where approved for the adoption yesterday and found out more about her. She belonged to a lawyer that never held her. She was adopted and kept for four years. She was returned to the program because the woman said she couldn’t stand her cooing. ...

Good luck with your new baby!
I know the feeling of waiting for a birdie, I think I’m picking up our IRN today (Norma Jean). Good luck with your new baby! We have a Yellow collard mini. Quite the clown! She doesn’t like hands, (she is slowly getting over that) but is very playful. They are so smart. Can’t wait to hear about yours!

Didn’t know exactly where to post this, diet and housing is my best guess! It dose involve both diet and housing…. We just got done with our house inspection for our fourth adoption for an IRN this tine, and it all went well. I started thinking that I should pass along a tip. PEAC recommends an emer...

good advice...
Good advice Nil, one of the parrots we adopted, our miniature macaw Mickey was completely bald on her chest and back when we got her. We spent a lot of time with her which was not easy, she had a fear of hands, and hated being touched in any way. After all of our research, Internet, books, breeders,...

corn & soy?.......
Corn has been added to the list of possible causes of feather plucking and self mutilation, at least in those birds that develop an allergy to it. As for the soy, the articles linked above seem to indicate a potential serious problem when feeding any soy products. Worth at least seriously limiting, ...

Thanks all, never even thought to check on the health benefits or dangers of soy beans I don’t even recall seeing them on any no-no bird food lists. It doesn’t surprise me that there are processed bird foods that still contain soy. As an avid label reader, I guess I never even thought about it as I ...

Didn’t mean to offend...
O.K., maybe milk and meat are good for us humans. (just not me!) I still have doubts that they belong in the diet of a creature that would never consume them in the wild. Just my opinion, and as I first said, I am certainly not an expert.

No, not at all. With Iguanas, no one knows exactly what they eat in the wild, but it's safe to say they are not eating pizza and french fries. In captivity you need to use a bit of comon sence. Just my opinion.

Just because your bird likes it ?
I’m not an expert on bird diets, but I am very familiar with the proper diet for many reptiles, especially Iguanas. Their natural diet, despite being mostly herbivore, dose occasionally include carrion, according to some that have observed them eating the odd dead fish when near water. Like most rep...

Wanted to share this joke I pulled on my boss. Over the next several weeks I kept adding to the story, even producing an (fake) ...
