Thanks Nil. My goal isn’t to eliminate soy, I just want it cut down. I’m sure I eat way too much, much more than I need. It’s in everything, from the cereal I eat, to the pellet I feed my birds. I think it’s a case of a little is enough for me, and for my birds, since they don’t need it, it may be b...

Alana8819, being vegan, I have been eating soy for years, so when I read the links above, I really started to wonder about it’s safety for birds AND humans. This article http://www.missionislam.com/health/dangers_of_soy.htm , although found in a unlikely place, has convinced me to limit soy as much ...

Melika, similarly, my wife used this technique to get our mini to let her pet and scratch her head (the birds head that is). She would calmly repeat, "touch the beak" while touching Mickey’s beak , and then slowly repeat, "touch the bird" while moving slowly to Mickey’s head. If ...

Why veggie?

Nil, my involvement with animal, reptile, and parrot adoptions let me see first hand how cold, unfeeling, and brutally cruel we humans can be. When animals are killed for human consumption, the pain, fear, and desperation to survive that all animals have should be reason enough, but most of us choos...

Whose training who?

I wanted to share two little training techniques I used with our parrots and conures, very simple, but they worked well. Our mini macaw who was afraid of hands would let me scratch her head for a few seconds and then would take a nip. She loves to interact verbally, and we make a chipmunk kind of ch...

Norma Jean is home!

Norma Jean is home! I picked her up yesterday afternoon. She was being fostered by the director of PEAC. Her flock is impressive, and inspiring. The first room had her two amazons. They are Mali Uromastix, although not as brightly colored as some. I think the uros are the most gentle of all lizards. Although the biggest one was named "Whippy" because that’s what happens when you touch his tail!

teaching older bird new words?

Got to wait until Saturday to get Norma Jean (IRN). We where approved for the adoption yesterday and found out more about her. She belonged to a lawyer that never held her. She was adopted and kept for four years. She was returned to the program because the woman said she couldn’t stand her cooing. ...

She doesn’t like hands, (she is slowly getting over that) but is very playful. They are so smart. Can’t wait to hear about yours!

Didn’t mean to offend...

O.K., maybe milk and meat are good for us humans. (just not me!) I still have doubts that they belong in the diet of a creature that would never consume them in the wild. Just my opinion, and as I first said, I am certainly not an expert.

No, not at all. With Iguanas, no one knows exactly what they eat in the wild, but it's safe to say they are not eating pizza and french fries. In captivity you need to use a bit of comon sence. Just my opinion.

I’m not an expert on bird diets, but I am very familiar with the proper diet for many reptiles, especially Iguanas. Their natural diet, despite being mostly herbivore, dose occasionally include carrion, according to some that have observed them eating the odd dead fish when near water. Like most rep...
