Re: Does an IRN suit my lifestyle?
I would say that unless you choose a pet that is a loner in regular life, you're looking at getting a duo (or more) of whatever animal and just being the 3rd wheel (so to speak) when you are home. I can clearly hear my birds outside on the other side of the house with the windows shut, so even thoug...

While this thread has been made of rather dense text, I don't mind. I feel we sometimes have to use a lot of words to express our details and our passions about the topics at hand. I've semi-enjoyed perusing the discussion lightly, as must be, given that I'm reading it at the end of a long work day ...

Re: Question On Bluffing
Hi sunset. Some people, myself included, believe this bluffing story is a myth. Think about these: Why would a young flock animal engage in a behaviour to keep other flock members away? Why would a young flock animal engage in behaviours to keep non-flock or (perceived) dangerous animals away? It ha...

Re: Soon to be newbie and name help
Hi and Welcome. I'm sure everyone has their own naming process that works for them. I feel it's nice to get to know your animal and see what name springs to mind. For birds, in particular, the gender is not always clear and is sometimes mistaken. I always suggest a gender-neutral name might be wise ...

Hi. I personally skip the grit. It's my understanding that, in the past, birds were given grit to aid their digestion. It seems to turn out that this was because some birds were found to have grit in their guts, so people thought they must need it. In time the theory developed that birds who eat who...

Re: Screaming whenever I leave
Hi. My tiny piece of help is to let you know the bird doesn't know he's done something wrong. Screaming isn't wrong; you just don't like it. You're trying to repress a natural expression. I couldn't say why he screams when you leave him, especially is he's free to follow. Is it possible he is so att...

Hi Tracey. Congratulations on your new bird. I think what you may be finding out is that these are living creatures, and they need to be taught stuff you want from them. And they will have their own ideas and reactions. They're not like a fish you can just set up be done. It seems to be true that so...

Re: Keep more than one IRN pet birds
My Ringneck experience is limited to two adult males. However, I note that my first bird's behaviour was changed only in the way that it is now very hard to get his attention when he is loose with the second bird. I must also note that since the second bird arrived, there has been NO reduction in th...

Hi and welcome. Congratulations. Most of your names are male gendered, with the exceptions Topaz (genderless, as far as I know), Lokie (could go either way), and Echo (female). You have to watch your birds and see. If they feel they are trapped and at the mercy of all comers then they may be rather uncomfortable, especially if the garden birds attract any kind of predator.

He's not conducting a test. If he were feeding YOU then that would probably indicate an overbonding situation. That's not to say he can't overbond with stuff in the cage, but if he's bound to do it then you can't stop him. Rocky fed his favourite toy. I was advised to remove it, and I did. The...

My bird has a feeding thing. It's seasonal and I can't stop it. I tried manipulating the light and diet. Now he has a friend and he fed the friend a little. I had to split them up recently because his tail was getting messed up - not wanting to find out the hard way if it would get worse. So now he'...

Re: Don't know what to do with my IRN
I agree a light curtain made of muslin or even lace would be fine. The bird can land on it and hang there, so if it's lace you have to be able to go take him off the curtain. If he won't let you, then don't do lace - the claws can get stuck in it. He will want to fly to the window because of the lig...

Good job resizing, thank you! Is he molting now, since you've had him? I'm tempted to say that his feathers that look so messy should otherwise be covered by those that have been cut off. Hi. It's hard for me to say what's happening there. The wings will molt and come in fresh at the normal time for molting.
